clearing cumbria (september 2013)
Just like the North East of Scotland, there was a little pocket of locations in Cumbria that I thought I could tick off in one little day
trip. So towards the end of September I found myself back on the bike heading down the M6 yet again. I seem to be heading down this stretch of motorway more than I want to, but there really isn’t a lot of alternatives.
trip. So towards the end of September I found myself back on the bike heading down the M6 yet again. I seem to be heading down this stretch of motorway more than I want to, but there really isn’t a lot of alternatives.
My first stop was the lifeboat station in Workington (Grim Ride – Lifeboats). After getting to the right area, I had a bit of a job finding the station itself. There were a lot of big machinery moving around, so I kept out of the way and took the picture from the other side of the harbour.
From here it was on to the Honister Pass (Grim Ride –Mountain Passes). The roads around this area are narrow and twisty, which are fun to ride as long as you’re not stuck behind slow moving traffic. Thankfully, on this occasion I had a pretty free run. At the summit is the Honister Slate Mine, but as usual; with these trips, I didn’t have time to take a wander around.
A few more twisty roads and it was down to Castlerigg standing stones (Grim Ride – Standing Stones), near Keswick. There was even an ice cream van here, but I managed to resist the temptation (don't quite know what Lynn Weller would make of that), especially since it was a bit of the chilly side already. That was it for today, so it was back up the M6 and home.

That pretty much tidies up locations within a day’s run from home, so any others will have to be a specific overnight trip, or on the way to a rally. Of course, new locations are added each year from the Two Wheel Poker and Round Britain rallies, so there’s always something to aim for.
