scottish rally
The Scottish Rally is the last element of the Three Nations Award and again, is similar in style to the Welsh, National and South West Peninsular rallies. It is a navigational scatter rally with various options for the rider. The difference from the others is that there are no manned checkpoints except for the finish. You need to collect receipts at each location as proof of your visit. This can prove tricky in the early hours of the morning, but you are encouraged to use your initiative.
It is similar to the National Rally in that the locations are all linked by a matrix (some numbered, others lettered) and you can only go between locations that have a link. Distances are on the matrix and it is these that should be counted towards your total distance, not the actual distance travelled. The Rally consists of a choice of six challenges, four of which take place on the rally weekend (the 2nd weekend in September), with the other two ‘Touring Challenges’ taking place over the previous month. You can combine some of the challenges as well.
The Challenges
Distance Challenge
Start at 10:00 on the Saturday and cover a minimum distance of 650 miles. You must arrive at the Final Control before midday on
Sunday.
Merit Challenge
Start at 10:00 on the Saturday and cover a minimum distance of 440 miles, calling at 3 numbered and at least 4 lettered receipt points. You must arrive at the Final Control before midday on Sunday.
Highlander Challenge
Start at 10:00 on the Saturday and call at 12 specified receipt points across the Highlands. You must arrive at the Final Control before midday on Sunday.
Touring Challenge
Start no sooner than 28 days prior to the rally Sunday, covering a minimum distance of 1000 miles, as per distances on the matrix, and visiting at least 20 receipt points.
Island Touring Challenge
Start no sooner than 28 days prior to the rally Sunday, calling at least 6 specified receipt points across Skye, Mull and Arran on no more than 4 consecutive days.
The Mystery Challenge
Enter this challenge and be prepared for anything! The mystery challenge can change each year. Mileage, timescales and full details are issued with the final rally instructions.
So if you want an excuse to travel some of the finest roads in the country (not that I’m biased in any way of course), then these give you something to aim for. Like the National Rally, the locations are connected in a matrix.
