South west peninsular rally
This was the first rally that I had entered. Although Rob's newsletter had mentioned it, I didn't have a lot of detail about the rally itself, so I was keen to see what it was all about. As it turned out, it was a good introduction to these types of "scatter" rallies, where everyone starts and finished at the same place, but can pick and choose which level of award to go for and which route to take to acheive it.
The rally is run by the Somerset Advance Motorcylcists group and the details are posted out to each entrant about two weeks in advance and contain a list of the locations that can be visited, along with registrations card etc. In additional to the Start/Finish lcoation, there are 4 manned locations, and about 30 or so unmanned. At the manned locations, you get your card stamped and signed, and complete a 10 question multiple choice quiz. There's no prize for the quiz, it's simply a way to encourage riders to get off their bikes for 10 minutes. Personally, I planned to use these stops to grab something to eat or drink and stretch the legs a bit.
For the unmanned locations, you receive a list of questions for each, which you then have to answer. The sort of question might be, "what is the animal on the pub sign?", or "what's the height restriction on the garage?". Hopefully they'll be easy enough to find.
There are three basic levels of award. Bronze (1 manned and 9 unmanned locations), Silver (2 manned and 12 unmanned) and Gold (3 manned and 15 unmanned). In addtion, you could go for the Lands End award where, in addition to the Gold award, you also had to visit Lands End and get your card stamped.
