My current bike is a Suzuki GSX 1250 FA. I bought it new in 2010 and, so far, managed to put about 44,000 miles on the clock. I don't use it for commuting, since I only have a 10 minute walk from work, so the vast majority of those miles are on various rallies and road trips.
A lot of other people who do long distance riding, make some fairly major modifications to their bikes, or "farkles" as they're known. There's a couple of theories about how this name came about. One is that it's a combination of the words "function" and "sparkle". Another is that it's an acronym of "Fancy Accessory Really Kool Likely Expensive". However, I haven't reallly made many changes to the bike since I bought it. I've added heated grips, a 12V socket and hard wired the sat nav, but that's it really.
Since the tank is 19 litres, which is about 180-190 miles range, the seat is comfortable enough to last that long. I suppose the one additional that I would think about, is an auxiliary fuel tank to increase that range (which might mean finding a more comfortable seat as well). But since I am by no means technically minded, I wouldn't know where to start, and I don't know of anyone near Edinburgh that could build and fit one for me, so I'll make do for now.
